In short: For a new website, connect Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools in the first week, submit the sitemap and request indexing for the key pages. Titles, the Google Business Profile and the first real links come next. On my site, impressions went from 19 to 113 in four days after indexing.
On launch day, a new website does not exist for Google yet. Until the search engine finds the pages and adds them to its index, the site will not show up for any search. So the main job of the first month is getting search engines to find the site. SEO for a new website starts there; keywords are worth thinking about after that.
Week 1: Search Console and the sitemap
- Add the site to Google Search Console. You prove ownership with a DNS record or an uploaded HTML file.
- Submit the sitemap. In WordPress, Rank Math or Yoast generates it, usually at
/sitemap_index.xml. - Request indexing for the most important pages (home, services, contact) in the URL inspection tool. There is a daily limit on requests, so start with the important ones.
On my own site I have requested indexing for 102 URLs by hand so far. Today 264 of 273 pages are indexed, which is 97%. If many of your pages are left out, I wrote about the most common causes here.
Week 1: do not skip Bing
You can import the site into Bing Webmaster Tools from Search Console in one click. It is worth it, because other search engines rely on Bing's index as well, ChatGPT search among them. With the IndexNow protocol, Bing hears about new pages immediately. Google does not use it.
Week 2: titles and descriptions
Every page needs a unique title of about 60 characters and a description of 120–155 characters. Put the phrase your customers actually search for in the title. "Dentist Miercurea Ciuc" is worth more than "Home". One H1 heading per page.
Week 2: Google Business Profile
For a local business, in the first months the profile often brings more enquiries than the website itself. Fill it in completely: category, services, opening hours, photos, website address. Ask your existing customers for the first reviews, and not too many at once, because Google may hold back a sudden burst of reviews.
Week 3: internal links and content
Service pages should link to each other and to the contact page. If you start a blog, write about the questions customers really ask you on the phone. One thorough article is worth more than five short ones. The content steps are covered in detail in SEO step by step.
Week 4: the first links
Few sites link to a new domain. The first links usually come from existing relationships: partner companies, suppliers, associations, local press, industry directories. My own first links came mostly from client site footers and partners. Do not buy links.
When do results show?
My own data: on 13 September 2026, several new pages entered the index at once. In the four days before, Google showed the site 19 times in search results; in the four days after, 113 times. By late October the 28-day figure was 3096.
Clicks come more slowly. New pages start out in positions 30–60, where hardly anyone clicks. For the first two months, watch the impressions in the Search Console Performance report. If that number grows, the site is heading the right way.
SEO for a new website: what does not matter in the first month
- getting a green Rank Math or Yoast score on every page
- domain authority (DA) and similar third-party metrics
- daily rank tracking
If you are launching a new site, or your existing one does not show up on Google, send me the address and I will take a look. For the business websites I build, basic SEO is included in the price.
