Wix, an AI website builder or WordPress? An honest comparison for small businesses

Today you can click a website together in minutes on Wix or with an AI tool. So do you still need a developer? This article compares the three routes: when a website builder is enough, when WordPress is worth it, and what to watch out for so you do not get locked in later.

Wix, AI-weboldalkészítő vagy WordPress? Őszinte összehasonlítás kisvállalkozásnak

In short: A website builder like Wix is enough for a simple, self-edited business card site, while WordPress pays off once you need Google traffic, multiple languages, or an online store. My WordPress sites start at 2,500 RON one-off, versus a Wix subscription that runs forever.

Today you can put a website together in minutes on Wix, Squarespace, or with an AI website builder that generates the whole thing from a single sentence. The question is fair: do you still need a developer?

Short answer: not always. I make my living from WordPress development, and yet there are people I tell that a website builder is enough for them. This article is about how to tell which one you are.

The three routes in brief

  • Website builder (Wix, Squarespace and the like): a monthly subscription where you assemble the site from a template by dragging things around. Hosting, security and updates are the provider's job.
  • AI website builder: you describe what you do, and within minutes there is a site with text and images. It often runs inside a website builder platform.
  • WordPress: an open-source system that runs on your own hosting. You can do anything with it, but updates and security are your responsibility (or your maintainer's).

When is a website builder enough?

  • You need a simple online business card with a few pages, and you have no big plans for it.
  • You want to edit it yourself and have no budget for someone else to build it.
  • Local search rankings do not matter, because your customers come from referrals or Facebook.
  • You want to test an idea before investing more seriously.

In these cases a website builder is quick and cheap to start with, and there is nothing wrong with it.

What to watch out for with website builders

  • You cannot take the site with you. A site built on Wix cannot be moved to another host: if you ever want to switch, it has to be rebuilt. The domain stays yours, but the site stays with the platform.
  • The subscription runs forever. From a low entry price, the useful features (your own domain, an online store, no ads) are in the more expensive plans, and prices can change yearly.
  • Your control over what search engines see is limited. The basic SEO settings are there, but for the finer points (structured data, correctly linking a multilingual site, speed) the platform sets the limits.
  • Multilingual support is often paid and limited. For a Hungarian-Romanian-English site in Szeklerland, that is an important factor.

What an AI website builder can and cannot do

AI tools produce a reasonably good-looking site surprisingly fast. The problem is usually the content:

  • The text is generic. The AI does not know how you differ from the business next door, so it writes sentences that would fit any company. Google and your visitors see that too.
  • Invented details. It sometimes adds a service, a number or a claim that is not true. Everything has to be read through.
  • The same platform underneath. A site made with AI lives on with the same limits as the builder.

I use AI in my own work too, as a tool that supports mine: I described how. The substance of the text always comes from real information from the client.

When is WordPress worth it?

  • If the website has to bring in customers from Google, especially from local searches. Here speed, structure and precise settings matter. My own site scores 100 on PageSpeed, even on mobile.
  • If you need a multilingual site (Hungarian, Romanian, English) with properly linked language versions.
  • If you need an online store with local payments, invoicing and couriers. I wrote separately about WooCommerce versus Shopify.
  • If you are thinking long term and want the site to be yours: movable to another host or another developer at any time.

The downside of WordPress is that it needs maintenance: updates, backups, monitoring. You either do it yourself or hand it over; with me it starts at 250 RON a month.

What does it actually cost?

A website builder's monthly fee looks small, but over years it adds up, and at the end you hold nothing you could take with you. A custom WordPress site with me starts at 2,500 RON as a one-off cost, plus the yearly fee for hosting and domain. I wrote about what a website's price depends on in detail in this article.

The decision in one sentence

If you only need an online business card and would edit it yourself, start with a website builder. If the site has to bring in customers, work in several languages, or sell, WordPress is the cheaper and more flexible route in the long run.

If you are not sure which case is yours, write me a few lines about your business and I will tell you. Even if the answer is that you do not need me.
